I don't get it..

I really don't get some people. In this case I am referring to people selling vintage stuff online. How come it is so hard to put out a price? I love vintage and anything that one can recycle or up-cycle.
But lately I find it harder and harder to find things to buy online. Cause there are a lot of sellers out there that seem to be living in a total phantasy world.
Today I came across a couple who have a lovely old oak cabinet. One of those sizes that fit into basically any kind of house no matter its size or ceiling height. All it takes is some hands on to make it more modern.
For this cabinet the owners want more than a new cabinet of the same quality would cost me. So I told them that was over my budget thanks for your time and moved on with my life. So far so good..
So far so good the sequal
Then some 2h later the man came back to me and asked me what I was willing to pay, cause his wife was now wondering.
So I told him my maximum offer of the cabinet would be an even €50. A number setting me worlds apart from their asking price, but to me that is what it is worth. No more, no less.
This is when he comes back to me to first of all tell me that was not a good enough offer - fine by me and no surprise really. No hard feelings, so so far so good.
However, this is where he gives me a number of the original purchase price. An amount not even mentioned in good old Euros, and this is not down to the thing being imported from the UK or such. No, this is because the cabinet is so old the Euro had not been invented just yet!!!
Make an offer!
Others don't even give you a price. Not even after asking for a hint of a price do they get back to you with such an answer but just refer to: Make an offer!
So I have started to just that, and am not even shy about it doing so. Cause if they cannot give me a price I will return the favour by not giving them any kind of hint what so ever about my actual budget according to the: I'd like to buy your sofa for €10.
I will need to get back on this topic and see how people respond to this approach. So far I noticed one seller updated their ad to a €25 price.
Which technically is not that far away from the €10 I originally offered. Cause if they told me €50 I would probably come back with a €25 offer.
