You reap what you sow...

For this season I wanted to try something different. So, I put some decorative pumpkin seeds into the ground, and soon enough they've taken over the whole planter box, the fence, and some poor lilacs.

The ground cherries from hell!

But considering the amount of pumpkins I got out of it, for the very little effort I put into it, it has been quite amazing. I also learnt pumpkins like these retail from €1.49 at the local garden centres.

Which mean I could have sold them for half and still made a good profit. Something to think about for next season.

Not as amazing were the ground cherries. Yes, were, as in past tense.

First of all I had to wait like forever to see any kind of movement and or proof of life after planting the seeds in our tunnel green house.

Cause as I've already declared at numerous occasions, patience is a virtue that I don't possess.

When these little seeds suddenly turned into plants, and were placed outside it once again took them forever to get into bloom. But it did happen.

And then BAM.

Either they are very easy to grow [when finally on the move], or we just provided them the ideal conditions to do so. Cause there were so many of them, and who wouldn't love that? At least till today.

They taste like death!

The taste of death

Today I gave them a try, and turns out these are the ground cherries from hell!

They are truly awful, I may be a picky eater of sort but never on veggies, berries and fruit.

But this trial ended up with me slushing down water, rinsing and repeating like for eternity to get this horror taste out of my mouth.

Now the actual plants are in one of the green bins to be picked up on Friday. Some berries fell off and are still in the planter box, but rest assure there won't be a trace of them after tomorrow.

Just imagine placing these plants in our own compost, and watch them come back to haunt us next year.

Lesson learnt for next year: Grow pumpkins upwards on a trellis, and make sure to not grow ground cherries at all.

ps: the skeleton is something I spiced up for Halloween, and it may have turned out a little bit more realistic than I intended, more about that another time🐲
